Reading from Psalm 119 is always an inspiring reminder of the joy to be experienced in a life of devotion to meditation on God’s nature and expressions. The enthusiastic focus of this Psalmist is a refreshing alternative to our culture’s insistence on having a never-ending supply of fast and easy distractions. Life lived in, with, and before God is one of endless depth and beauty. As the reading from Isaiah reminds us, the alternative gods our culture offers us cannot save us. Worship of our accomplishments, or entertainment, or pleasure, or greed, or beauty, or popularity, or national identity, or affiliation with a political party or “our tribe” cannot deliver us. As Paul indicates in the passage from 2 Corinthians, that which makes us competent at life is found by living toward God through Christ.
