Today’s readings extend reflection on the life of Abraham and the meaning of his example in the Christian church. The Genesis reading explains how Abraham (then still known as Abram) and his wife Sarai followed what seemed to them to be the only course of action that could fulfill God’s promise to make a great nation of Abraham’s descendants. This path quickly leads to conflict and breakdown.
The selection from Romans continues Paul’s exploration of how one is brought into God’s covenant family. Paul makes the bold proclamation that the mark of membership in God’s family is not physical, but is faithful commitment and trust in God’s promises.
